News from the conference: High Tech! High Touch!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Don’t miss the 7th International Conference of Hands On! Europe 2009 and reserve the dates now!!

From 3rd until 6th November 2009, the conference is hosted by La Cité des sciences et de l’industrie – Paris – La Villette, in partnership with Hands On! Europe.

On the occasion of the opening of “La Cité des enfants, next generation”, its brand new children spaces, la Cité des sciences will share its experience, questions and vision on children museology with the participants.

A privileged event for all professionals who deal with children from 2 to 12 years as their main target group: representatives of children’s museums, education departments, science centres, cultural centres, exhibition designers, animators …

You will find sessions that challenge us to explore the theme:

High Tech! High Touch!

Where does the future lie for children's museums? Is technology destined to sweep all before it or will a more hands-on approach win the day?

Young people today are continually adapting to technological innovations which are increasingly accessible to the general public. Now fully integrated into their school and family environments, children can take these technologies on board with an ease which often leaves adults bewildered.

More and more children's museums are questioning the role which new technologies should now play, in terms of mediation, usages and tools. Can a museum for children remain effective in promoting learning if it shuns new technologies? But if the museum is striving to adapt actual conditions in the outside world should it not instead keep its distance so as to foster activities linked to concrete aspects, physical contact and the senses in general?

What are the specific features of museums aimed at children? Is there an educational function ensuring access for all and availability of innovative technologies? Or should children's museums favour mediation founded on corporal, sensory and mechanical aspects which assigns renewed importance to a certain contact with reality?

The "Hands-on Europe" conference will be held over four days from 3 to 6 November 2009. The programme will comprise presentations in plenary sessions, debates, personal accounts with a panel of experts and workshops.

One day will be dedicated to emerging technologies and their role in children's museums. The second day will focus on active participation and sharing of experiences between those attending. Visits will also be organised to museums in Paris to enable participants to exchange views on their professions and practices.

La Cité des sciences et de l’industrie and its team will be happy to welcome you!!
